Welcome Home!

We meet Jesus in Luke 15 at the table. He is there because people came looking for him. And not just any people- “tax collectors and sinners.” What Luke is saying is, “the worst of the worst came looking for Jesus, and he sat and ate with them.” Of course, the religious people didn’t like this. Jesus associating with the worst of the worst was not to be expected from a Bible teacher.

In order to help the religious people understand what was happening, Jesus told them three stories that reveal how God really feels about us. He tells a story about a sheep that gets lost and the shepherd who chases him. God understands that we are vulnerable. He tells the story of a woman who lost a coin and upends her home to find. God understands that we are valuable.

And then he gets to a story about a son who leaves home only to find that he has lost his way. He decides to return and ask his dad to let him back in as a servant. To his surprise, his father not only welcomed him back into the family, but had been waiting for his return!
